Today, The Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head Island held a number of mock trials. They tried members who violated the Club's code of conduct.Retired attorney Michael Briggs served as the judge, but it was the students who decided the offenders' punishment, ranging in all kinds of sentences from writing apology letters to doing community service at the club. It's a practice the staff says is helping to teach the kids to take responsibility for their actions.

"It is working," said Joyce Wright, unit director. "We found that the children who are in court are not having to come back in court."

After the offenders serve their sentence, many are brought in to serve on the jury to experience both sides of the law.
